Almond Joy Brownies
I’ve never really understood the Mounds versus the Almond Joy. Because let’s face it, they are both coconut candy bars; one just happens to have a couple of almonds stuck on top. Calling it an “Almond” Joy is very misleading when you think about it. To the uninitiated, it would seem as if the candy bar is all about almonds, so they are in for a shock when they bite into it and discover it’s made mostly of coconut. If they are a serious almond lover, or worse yet, they don’t like coconut, they are bound to feel a little cheated. Wouldn’t it be simpler to call it “Mounds with Almonds?"
But Almond Joys are something of an institution in the candy bar world, as is the silly catchphrase “Sometimes you feel like a nut, sometimes you don’t.” So you don’t mess with that, no matter how much of a misrepresentation the name may be. You just smile and nod and accept it, because it’s a cultural icon and everyone actually knows what it means. If they don’t, they must be from another country with a vastly different culture. Like Canada.
So this here Canadian decided she needed to de-sugar that famous, poorly-named candy bar and turn it into something that the health conscious could enjoy. I am sure that the very act of de-sugaring such an American standard is in itself considered treason. As a non-American, I can’t actually be accused of treason. I can, however, be deported from my adopted homeland. Oops. Please don’t tell anyone! Just make these brownies and enjoy them in the seclusion of your own home. It will be our little secret.
